UNESCO lists the M'Zab Valley as a World Heritage site, inscribed in 1982. It lies 600 km south of Algiers, in the Sahara, and groups five ksour (fortified villages): El-Atteuf, Bounoura, Melika, Ghardaïa and Beni-Isguen, founded between 1012 and 1350.
UNESCO describes a traditional human habitat created in the 10th century by the Ibadites around their five ksour. It has kept almost the same way of life and the same building techniques since the 11th century. Each ksar is surrounded by walls and dominated by a mosque whose minaret works as a watchtower.
